Dr. Spivak is Professor Emeritus, Fire Protection Engineering, University of Maryland, USA. He served 33 years in academia with foci on fiber-textile materials science and engineering, plus textiles and clothing fire safety and fire protection engineering. Dr. Spivak remains active with cleaning industry professionals in science and research, textile and furnishings restoration, contract cleaning and maintenance services. Since 2008, he serves as science advisory council chair of the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI). Previously he served for over three decades with the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) as textile materials and furnishings science advisor. In the latter capacity, he published some 300 monthly “Technical Topics” articles in RIA’s Cleaning and Restoration magazine. Spivak holds a Ph.D. in polymer & fiber (materials) science from the University of Manchester (U.K.). He has been awarded a Fellow of several professional societies, including distinctions of FTI, FSFPE and FSES. He is an Honorary Member of ASTM International and recipient of ASTM’s William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award, its highest distinction among all members worldwide.
